Trail and Mountain Racing in Southern Snowdonia
The Ultra Wales 50 is a trail and mountain event covering a distance of 51 miles with a total elevation gain of 2898m. The course explores the southern regions of Snowdonia, traversing notable landmarks such as Cadair Idris Penygader at 893m and Rhinog Fach at 712m. Participants also pass through Dolgellau, the Barmouth estuary, and the Coed-y-Brenin forest.
The event follows a single-loop format starting and finishing at the Coed-y-Brenin Visitor Centre. There is a strict cut-off time of 20 hours to complete the course. Runners are supported by six checkpoints distributed along the route, providing refreshments such as water, fruit, and snacks, including vegetarian and vegan options. Entrants must utilize a provided GPS tracking device for the duration of the race.
Specific entry requirements apply to this event:
- Participants must be at least 20 years old on race day.
- Runners must have successfully completed at least one organized marathon-distance event prior to the start.
- A mandatory kit must be carried at all times, including a waterproof coat, hardcopy maps, a compass, a survival blanket, and two light sources.
The race has a capacity of 500 places. Finishers are awarded medals based on their finishing position, with gold, silver, and bronze tiers available. The event does not permit the use of pacers or support runners. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
