Ultra Wales 50 : Event overview

Ultra Wales is a mountain and trail race of 51 miles with 2,898 m of ascent. The course is based at Coed-y-Brenin in Southern Snowdonia and includes sections on Cadair Idris (893 m), Rhinog Fach (712 m), Dolgellau, the Barmouth estuary and forested trails in Coed-y-Brenin. The 2026 edition is listed as the 7th edition. Entry is limited to 500 places and the published entry fee is £119. The event has an overall cut-off of 20 hours and offers live online GPS tracking.

Course, checkpoints and rules

The route has six checkpoints at approximately 12, 18, 23.3, 31.4, 40 and 46.3 miles, with a finish at 51 miles. Each checkpoint provides drinks and food items including cola, electrolyte drink, water, juice, sandwiches, salted potatoes, fruit and snacks; vegetarian and vegan options are available. A medic, first responder or first aider will be present at each checkpoint. Checkpoint cut-offs are strictly enforced and participants must check in at every checkpoint.

Participants must be at least 20 years old and must have completed at least a marathon prior to the event. No pacers or support runners are permitted. Support crews are allowed at most checkpoints but not at checkpoints 5 and 6. No drop bags are permitted and there is no facility to leave a bag at the start/finish. Mandatory kit must be carried at all times and includes a hardcopy map, waterproof coat, baseplate compass, whistle, drybag with a long-sleeved base layer, minimum 1 litre water, charged mobile phone, survival foil blanket, primary headtorch, secondary light and the GPS tracker provided by the organisers.
