Ultra Wales 50 - Event overview

Ultra Wales 50 is a 50 mile trail and mountain race held on Saturday 20th June 2026 in Southern Snowdonia, based at the Coed-y-Brenin Visitor Centre. The course distance is 51 miles with 2898 m of ascent. The route passes Cadair Idris (893 m), Rhinog Fach (712 m), Dolgellau, the Barmouth estuary and the Coed-y-Brenin forest. Entry is limited to 500 places, the overall cut-off for the event is 20 hours and the entry fee is £119. Live online GPS tracking is provided during the race.

Course, checkpoints and rules

The course includes six checkpoints at approximately 12, 18, 23.3, 31.4, 40 and 46.3 miles. Each checkpoint offers refreshments (cola, tailwind, water, juice, sandwiches, salted potatoes, fruit, snacks, crisps, chocolate) with vegetarian and vegan options, and a medic or first aider on site. Support crews are welcome at the earlier checkpoints but are not permitted at the 40 mile and 46.3 mile checkpoints. Drop bags are not permitted and there is no facility to leave a bag at the start/finish.

Participants must be at least 20 years old and have previously completed at least a marathon. Mandatory kit must be carried at all times and is subject to random checks; required items include a hardcopy map (specified map sheets or OS equivalents), waterproof coat with sealed seams (minimum 10,000 mm), baseplate compass, whistle, long sleeve base layer in a drybag, at least 1 litre of water, a fully charged mobile phone, a survival/foil blanket, a primary headtorch and a secondary light, plus the GPS tracker supplied by the organiser. Pacers and support runners who are not entered in the race are not permitted. Results and official photographs are published after the event.
